Becoming a Christian
First, the Bad News
The Bible says that mankind has a problem called sin. Sin is any action or attitude that falls short of God’s perfect standard. Every one of us has the problem of sin. The Bible teaches that the consequence of sin is a separation from God that leads to death. There’s also nothing we ourselves can do to solve the problem of sin.
Now, the Good News
The Bible says that there is a solution to the problem of sin. That solution is the person of Jesus. God loves us so much that He sent His only son, Jesus, to die in our place. Jesus paid the penalty of your sins so that you wouldn’t have to be forever separated from God. The Bible teaches that Jesus is the only solution for our problem of sin.
You need to make a decision
Every one of us must make a decision about God’s free gift of salvation. You can either:
- Accept God’s free gift of salvation by putting your trust in Jesus Christ.
- Reject God’s free offer of salvation.
If you haven’t accepted God’s offer of eternal life, we can think of no better time than right now. If you would like to accept God’s offer of salvation, you can do it right now, wherever you are. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done or how bad you may consider yourself to be. The offer is open to everyone.
Here’s how you do it
- Recognize that Jesus died on the cross for your sins: No matter how good a life we try to live, we still fall miserably short of being a good person. That is because we are all sinners. We all fall short of God’s desire for us to be holy. Yet, “God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while were still sinners” (Romans 5:8). This is the Good News – that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die in our place when we least deserved it.
- Repent of your sin: The Bible tells us to “repent and be converted” (Acts 3:19). The word “repent” means to change our direction in life. Instead of running from God, we can run toward Him.
- Receive Jesus Christ into your life: Becoming a Christian is not merely believing some creed or going to church on Sunday. It is placing your trust in Jesus; it is making Jesus your Savior and Lord in your life. If you would like to have a relationship with Christ, simply pray this prayer and mean it in your heart.
Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe you died for my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and give you my heart and life. I confess you as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you for saving me.
If you just prayed that prayer and meant it, you are now a child of God! Your decision to follow Christ means God has forgiven you and that you will spend eternity in heaven. The Bible tells us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
If you have received Christ into your life, don’t hide it–tell somebody!
